    Rumah Terbuka ‘Deeparaya’ 2008

On Saturday, 11th October 2008, UMNO Auckland in collaboration with Petunia, UMSA and MSD held a ‘Rumah Terbuka Deeparaya’ 2008, taking place at Fale Pasifika, University of Auckland.

It was one of the biggest events of the year organized by UMNO Auckland with other Malaysian clubs in Auckland. It was attended by almost 400 people, who includes the Malaysian students in Auckland and Malaysians who work in Auckland. Groups of students from Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and Palmerston North who were coincidently in Auckland were also invited.

The event started with a brief speech from Malaysia Ambassador to New Zealand, Dato’ Sopian Ahmad at 5.30pm. Dato’ was impressed with the crowd that turn up that night. He remarked that this was the biggest and best Deeparaya celebration he had the chance to go to so far in New Zealand. Dato’ also wished the students all the best for the upcoming exams and hope we will continue to uphold the good name of Malaysia in New Zealand.

Guests were served with delicious Nasi Beriyani, catered by Santhiya, an Indian Restaurant here in Auckland. The food proved to be a much delightful treat to Malaysians who were craving for a taste of home, as they mingled and socialized. Some guests also brought plenty home-made dishes to be shared together.

The event ran smoothly and it was an opportunity to gather Malaysians in one place. It was nice to see people meeting old friends and making new friends throughout the event. It also tightened the bond amongst Malaysians in Auckland. The event finished at 8.00pm and every one enjoyed and hoping it will be held annually.
