    Waikato Hospital Visit

    Waikato Hospital Visit

    Waikato Hospital

7 December 2008 – Malaysian communities both and Malaysia and New Zealand were saddened by the news that a group of visiting professors and students from UiTM was involved in a tragic road accident at north Putaruru, Tirau, New Zealand. Two out of six people in the van died.

UMNO Auckland has taken the initiative to drive down to Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, about one and a half hours’ drive from Auckland, to pay a visit and gave the victims moral support, also to assist the victim’s family who flew in a few days ago in every way possible while they were here in New Zealand.

Mohd Ridhwan Mohd Ali who headed this trip was joined by, Jaziri Alkaf Suffian, former president and his family, and Ramana Rajalingam, a representative from Malaysia Airline.

We met the victims Amirul Rashid Abd. Razak, 21, Siti Murni Ayu Mohd, 23, and Khairul Fitri Mohd, 14. Nor Aishah Razi has flown back to Malaysia as soon as she was released from the hospital.

Amirul is in a stable condition, he was badly injured with a fractured rib cage, Ayu received only minor injuries and has been released from the hospital while her brother Fitri is still in the ICU but has gained consciousness. Fitri joined the trip to follow her sister Ayu during the school break.

From our conversation with them, they came to New Zealand for their study trip organized by the UiTM Photography Club. There were ten of them but only six did the trip to Rotorua, one of the popular and beautiful tourist attractions in New Zealand, where on the trip back to Auckland their van collided with a truck. The other 4 stayed back in Auckland.

On the day of the accident we were informed that the combination of road fatigue due to long hours of driving and unfamiliar with the New Zealand roads had lead to the accident.

Ayu and Fitri’s parents were at the hospital and they were delightful and relief that their children survived the accident. They informed us that Malaysians all over New Zealand came to show their grief and support through this time of difficulty.

We were told that the Muslim community in Hamilton was very helpful and helping with preparing Shafiee Ahmad, 51, deputy dean of Student Affairs at Communications and Media Studies Faculty, and Mariam Sakinah Ahmad, 21, for Islamic burial before the bodies were sent back to Malaysia.

Big appreciation to Mr Fauzi Mohd Kassim and family, a Malaysian working in Hamilton who has helped the victims and their families in arranging and sorting any inconveniences.

Special thanks to the Malaysian Student Department and Dato’ Sopian Ahmad, High Commissioner of Malaysia to New Zealand in Wellington who have assisted in making sure processes go on smoothly and all needs are attended too.

Ridhwan urges that we should always be road wise and rest when we feel tired on the road. It helps to make contact with other fellow Malaysians while we make trips overseas.

We left Waikato Hospital at 2pm and will keep track of their improvements.

On Saturday, 11th October 2008, UMNO Auckland in collaboration with Petunia, UMSA and MSD held a ‘Rumah Terbuka Deeparaya’ 2008, taking place at Fale Pasifika, University of Auckland.

It was one of the biggest events of the year organized by UMNO Auckland with other Malaysian clubs in Auckland. It was attended by almost 400 people, who includes the Malaysian students in Auckland and Malaysians who work in Auckland. Groups of students from Wellington, Hamilton, Christchurch and Palmerston North who were coincidently in Auckland were also invited.

The event started with a brief speech from Malaysia Ambassador to New Zealand, Dato’ Sopian Ahmad at 5.30pm. Dato’ was impressed with the crowd that turn up that night. He remarked that this was the biggest and best Deeparaya celebration he had the chance to go to so far in New Zealand. Dato’ also wished the students all the best for the upcoming exams and hope we will continue to uphold the good name of Malaysia in New Zealand.

Guests were served with delicious Nasi Beriyani, catered by Santhiya, an Indian Restaurant here in Auckland. The food proved to be a much delightful treat to Malaysians who were craving for a taste of home, as they mingled and socialized. Some guests also brought plenty home-made dishes to be shared together.

It also tightened the bond amongst Malaysians in Auckland. The event finished at 8.00pm and every one enjoyed and hoping it will be held annually.

    UMNO Auckland Aidilfitri Open House

    UMNO Auckland Aidilfitri Open House

5 October 2008 - UMNO Auckland held an Aidilfitri Barbeque from 2pm till 6pm in Meadowbank. This was a wonderful opportunity for all UMNO Auckland members and Malaysian students in Auckland to gather and celebrate Aidilfitri together! It made us felt like we were at home and cured our missing about “suasana hari raya” in Malaysia.

Our open house this year was a combined effort with our previous president, Mr. Jaziri Alkaf as the event was held at his home in Meadowbank. We met a lot of old and some new friends during this BBQ Open House. It was a very memorable memory.

The UMNO Auckland team would like to thank all those who attended UMNO’s Raya Open House and we hope that the event was enjoyable and worth the bus ride because we certainly enjoyed the company of our members!

UMNO New Zealand Rugby Cup 2008

    UMNO NZ CUP

On July 3rd 2008, in conjunction with Bersatu Games 2008, UMNO Auckland Club successfully organized the inaugural annual Rugby 10’s tournament, UMNO NEW ZEALAND CUP 2008. This tournament was held at Miramar Pologrounds, Miramar, Wellington. This event was fully funded by Sekretariat Kelab UMNO Luar Negara with the Cup, Piala Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam fully sponsored by UMNO Melaka. A token of appreciation also goes to UMNO Wellington for their help with the logistic preparation during the tournament day.

This tournament was supposed to be a match between four major regions in New Zealand. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, team Otago withdrawn themselves from the tournament, leaving only three teams competing to find the first ever champion; Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The tournament format was changed to a tri-region competition with two rounds whereby each team will play against each other in each round. Total points for each team were used to determine the champion and both runners-up.

On the day itself, players and supporters were transported to the field by a chartered bus, arrived at the field around 8.30 am. Although it was not a particularly fine weather day, all players and supporters were still full of spirit and enthusiasm to play. Wellington Rugby Referee Association was kind enough to send three volunteers as referees during the tournament.

The tournament kicked-off with the first match between Christchurch and Wellington at around 9.30am. All players were given a half an hour break after the first round, with high hopes for the weather to be better. However, the weather continued to be dull even after the break until the end of the tournament, around 12.30pm. Luckily, there were no major injuries with only one player had to be sent to the clinic for a strained shoulder.

Datuk Sopian Ahmad, High Commissioner of New Zealand was kind enough to come and watch the tournament and represent the trophy and medals to the winners. In the end, Christchurch team emerged as the first ever tournament winners with Wellington and Auckland team finished in second and third place. The tournament ended at around 1pm and the chartered bus came at around 2pm to bring back all players and supporters to Wellington City Centre.

For the future, it is hoped that this tournament will be continued annually and improved. The organizer would like to thank our sponsors, Sekretariat Kelab UMNO Luar Negara and UMNO Melaka for their support to make this tournament a success. An appreciation note also goes for UMNO Wellington, Wellington Malaysian Student Organization (WMSO) and Petronas Union in Auckland (PETUNIA) for their help and support.

UMNO New Zealand in Bersatu Games 2008

UMNO NEW ZEALAND IN BERSATU GAMES 2008

Bersatu Games is an annual sporting event that gathers Malaysian students throughout New Zealand. This year, it was held in the capital city of New Zealand, Wellington and commenced from 28th June to 2nd July 2008. Bersatu Games 2008 were joint-hosted by Wellington Malaysian Students Organisation (WMSO) and Massey University Malaysian Students Association (MUMSA). Other than competing in sports, Bersatu Games offer opportunities for students to meet old and new friends.

Taking this opportunity, UMNO New Zealand sent a contingent consisting of 37 students down to Wellington to compete in the Bersatu Games. It was an improvement with reference to the number of players because during, Bersatu Games 2007, UMNO New Zealand sent only 18 students to represent the club. This year, UMNO New Zealand is proud to participate in all 10 games.

This year, three new games were introduced which are, Ultimate Frisbee, Futsal (Women’s) and Handball. There were also 8 other games, which were, Soccer, Badminton, Touch Rugby, Netball, Sepak Takraw, Volleyball, and Basketball.

Wellington is a city that is famous for being the city of the wind. Because of this, there were few unexpected events occurred during the course of Bersatu Games. The games started on the the 29th June 2008 and the games that were scheduled were all outdoor games. We were greeted with strong wind and heavy downpour which made it even impossible for us to play outdoor.  Hence the organizers had to come up with their backup plan and we ended up playing indoor. Most of the participants were not happy with it but we had to compromise since we couldn’t make the rain and wind to stop.

Apart from the chaotic 2nd day, everything went according to plan. The course of Bersatu Games ran smoothly. All of the contingents showed their own strengths and tried their utmost to win games, especially UMNO New Zealand players. We fought like warriors on battlefields, on court. Never gave up and did everything that we could to win. But win and lose are the nature of competitions.  We won and we lost.

We managed to get through to the semi-final stage in 7 from 10 games. It was a marked improvement. Last year, we only managed to get one silver medal. At the end of the Bersatu Games 2008, UMNO New Zealand contingent brought home 2 Silvers (Ultimate Frisbee and Badminton), 2 Bronzes (Volleyball and Soccer)and 3 4th places (Netball, Touch Rugby and Handball). It is hoped that next year UMNO New Zealand will play even better.

UMNO New Zealand managed to get number 4 in the overall standings, an achievement that we should all be proud of. Even though we were far from home, arguably, we were the loudest throughout the five days of Bersatu Games 2008. We cheered our teams in order to enhance their spirits. In my personal opinion, we were No.1 in every department. Effort, support, attitude, we were the No.1.  As the head contingent, I’m proud with all of my players. Win or lose came second. The most important thing is the fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude, which were demonstrated by every single member of UMNO New Zealand contingent.

We left huge expressions to everyone. We made ourselves big from the very beginning to the very end. Last year, we were merely a small unknown team that every team looked forward to attack, but now, we are a big team that every team tries to avoid. We already have plans for next year’s Bersatu Games which, perhaps, will be held in Auckland, and we are aiming to win next year.

Dinner with Vice Chansellor of University Sains Malaysia

Dinner with Vice Chansellor of University Sains Malaysia

1 June 2008- The University Sains Malaysia (USM) staff were here in Auckland since 1st of June in their task to encourage PHD students to work with them. We were invited to attend the dinner with Prof Datuk Dzulkifli Abdul Razak who is the Vice Chancellor of Univerisity Sains Malaysia. The event was held in University of Auckland’s iSpace and it started at 8.00pm.

In his introductory speech, Datuk introduced the background of USM and the main reasons that they are visiting Auckland and also other New Zealand cities. He also mentioned the opportunities that one could gain by becoming a USM staff or lecturer in various departments. 75 percent of lecturers in USM have PHDs and USM would want to maintain or increase the percentage in the future by bringing new PHD holders. This goes in line with the long term effort of USM in maintaining their status as being the number one university in Malaysia with reference to the fact that they are highly recognized as a leading research-based university.

After the speech, we had our dinner and also a photography session. Many people took the opportunity during the dinner to discuss with the USM staffs regarding the requirements in working there and many other issues that can be beneficial for the USM staffs and also the PHD students.
